Meringue is used to describe a made of egg whites and sugar that are mixed till they become stiff. There are two kinds: soft meringue and hard meringue. The first one is the one used for pies and other desserts. The latter has a hollow center often filled with cream and fruit. A meringue cake is an elegant dessert made of two layers of butter cakes topped with golden meringue. Now here's a recipe for making your very own treat.
Ingredients for the cake batter:
Cake Pans
* 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
* 1 cup or 100 grams of cake flour
* 4 egg yolks
* 1 teaspoon of baking powder
* 1/8 teaspoon of salt
* 1/2 cup or 100 grams of granulated white sugar
* 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
* 1/4 cup or 60mL of milk
Making the cake layers:
- Preheat your oven to 177 degrees Celsius or 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Put some butter and flour on the cake pans, cut some parchment paper for the pan and put butter and flour on it. This will prevent your meringue cake from sticking to the pan.
- Separate the egg yolks from the whites; put them in different bowls, cover them and wait for about 30 minutes before using them.
- In another bowl, mix the flour, baking powder and salt.
- Beat the butter until it becomes soft, then add the sugar and continue beating lightly until the mixture is fluffy.
- Add the egg yolks to the butter one at a time and beat them thoroughly.
- Add vanilla extract.
- Add the flour mixture and milk alternately thrice: flour first and flour last. After this, divide the batter and put them into two pans. Smoothen the tops and set aside first while making the meringue layer.
* 4 egg whites
* 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar
* 1/3 cup of granulated sugar
* 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
Making the meringue layers:
- Beat the egg whites until they become foamy then add the cream of tartar while beating. When you see soft bumps, add in the sugar until the peaks stiffen. Continue beating then add in the vanilla extract afterwards.
- Smooth the top of the cake layers with the meringue mixture and bake for 25-30 minutes. When it is done, the meringue should be light brown and an inserted toothpick in the center should come out clean. After baking, allow the meringue cake to cool before removing from the pans.
* 1 cup of heavy whipping cream
* 1-2 tablespoons of white sugar
* 1 pound of cut, fresh strawberries (or any fruit you wish)
* Icing sugar
Beat the cream with sugar until peaks appear and add sugar-sweetened strawberry slices. Once done, put some of the mixture on to your meringue cake; first layer first. Put the second layer on top of it and dust the top with icing sugar. This meringue cake can be enjoyed by 8-10 people.
